Our History

A friendly country pub, the "Ellesmere Arms" (now known as "Tai Tapu Hotel") has been the local watering hole since the 1860s. It was originally a stagecoach inn, complete with stables and forge on the road to Akaroa. Nowadays it’s one of Canterbury’s most popular venues hosting live music; concerts; weddings; parties; conferences; weekly quiz nights and meal deals.   But mostly, it is a weekend destination for the family with its large beer garden, playground and bouncy castles for the kids.

The function venue is nestled in the beautiful Tai Tapu hills within easy driving distance of Christchurch. We offer you a unique private function room with bar that opens onto a beautiful private garden area.
